Garlic Naan

India

30 Minutes

In the last weeks, Pragya and I have been cooking a lot of Indian delicacies and put the recipes here on the blog. So far Pragya was mainly working as a cook in the background.

But now she is also coming to the fore as a recipe author for her delicious Indian Naan bread. In her Naan recipe she shows you how to bake this delicious garlic bread:

Indian Garlic Naan – Recipe for the garlic bread

In the weeks before and after Easter, Henrik and I moved our Corona HomeOffice to his family. On such an occasion there is, of course, a lot of food served and everybody cooked something for dinner. I wanted to make an Indian dish, but not spicy, because they can’t eat spicy. ☹

So I made garlic naan. It is an amazingly delicious bread that you can eat alone or with a dip or sauce. I was surprised that they liked it so much because Henrik’s family asked me to make the naan again the next days.

Ingredients for the Garlic Naan

  • 1/4 cup of warm water
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1 package dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 3/4 cup natural yogurt
  • 4 cups of flour
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • Some melted butter to spread
  • 4 cloves of chopped garlic
  • Fresh coriander to decorate

Preparation of the Indian naan

1. Mix yeast, sugar and warm water in a measuring cup and let it rest for about 10 minutes. In the meantime, mix flour and salt in a large bowl and make a depression in the middle.

2. Stir the warm milk and natural yogurt into the yeast mixture until it is well mixed. Now stir everything slowly and in batches into the flour mixture until a dough is formed. Then turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 3-4 minutes to a smooth dough. Place the dough in a large, lightly oiled bowl and cover loosely with a damp kitchen towel. Let it rise at room temperature for about 1 hour until it is twice as big.

3. Turn out the dough onto a floured surface. Knead the dough again well and then cut it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball.

4. Heat a large pan with a heavy base to medium temperature. Roll out each ball of dough until it is about half a centimeter thick and about 15 centimeters in diameter. Melt the butter in a microwave and then mix it with the chopped garlic.

5. Lightly brush the dough with butter and bake this naan for naan in a pan. Leave one side of the naan in the pan for 2 minutes until large bubbles form on the surface. Spread the top with garlic butter, turn it over and bake on the other side for about 1 minute until golden brown. Spread the top again with garlic butter and spread the chopped coriander on top.

6. Stack the baked flatbreads on a plate and cover them with a towel to keep the naan breads warm while you prepare the remaining pieces. By the way, the Garlic Naan tastes great with my Green Chutney or the yogurt mint sauce from my Aloo Paratha recipe. I wish you bon appetite ^^

Indian Naan – My Conclusion

Naan is a very simple but in combination with garlic and some coriander super delicious Indian dish. Especially at the typical German barbecue evenings in summer, Indian Garlic Naan is a perfect side dish.

What do you think about Indian side dishes for German barbecues? I look forward to your comments.
